MORTARD®

Retarding admixture for masonry mortar

Product Description

MORTARD® is a ready-to-use, pale brown aqueous solution of chemical compounds that provide extended life, increased workability and greater compressive strengths of Portland cement-based masonry mortar. The ingredients are factory premixed in exact proportions under strict quality control to provide uniform, predictable masonry mortar.

One litre of MORTARD weighs approximately 1.2kg ± 0.02kg

Applications

The masonry construction industry’s need for job site mixing of mortar has typically been carried out by proportioning with shovels or pails. This requires the maintenance of a site stockpile of aggregate and cementitious materials as well as mixers and mixer men. MORTARD used in ready mix mortar eliminates these needs and at the same time increases productivity, while providing mortar consistency and uniformity, a requirement for quality masonry work.

Product Advantages

  • Extended life of fresh mortar up to 48 hours
  • Reliable quality and uniformity of pre-mixed mortar
  • Improved plasticity, water retention and board life
  • Ready-to-use fresh mortar eliminates site mixing, minimises labour costs
  • Improved productivity

MORTARD is used in centrally-produced ready-mixed masonry mortar. Mortar prepared with MORTARD remains plastic, provides increased workability and extended life, allowing you to store mortar in covered bulk containers, buckets, tubs, pans or bags. Actual mortar life is dependent upon dosage rate.

Typical mortar life of 12 to 48 hours is possible.

MORTARD is used to provide extended life in Portland cement/ lime mortar as well as in masonry cement mortar. Other uses for MORTARD include Portland cement-based stucco scratch and surface coats.

Addition Rates

Addition rates for MORTARD range from 0.40 to 0.80L / 100kg of cementitious material. The amount used will depend upon the period of workability required for specific job conditions. In general, longer periods of workability or higher temperatures will require higher addition rates. Conversely, the addition rate of MORTARD will be lower for shorter periods of workability or trowelability, but in general, minimal re-tempering will not deter quality. An evaluation of addition rates with specific mortar materials and proportions is recommended.

Compatibility with Other Admixtures

MORTARD is compatible in mortar with all commercial airentraining admixtures such as Daravair. Due to the slight airentraining properties of MORTARD it is necessary to make a preliminary evaluation of air entrainment and make product dosage adjustments accordingly.

Protect from freezing. Once frozen, the product should be thawed out slowly and re-mixed thoroughly prior to use.

Action

MORTARD provides extended mortar life, disperses cement particles, allows for more complete cement hydration and greater mortar strengths. Through its retarding action, MORTARD will maintain the plasticity of the mortar while in bulk storage. Upon application of the mortar in thin beds, the setting characteristic is accelerated. The masonry units absorb the mixing water and dissolved admixture, causing the mortar to stiffen and setting to accelerate.

Advantages

Economy is the primary benefit. Years of experience have proven that ready-mixed concrete is more economical than site-mixed concrete. Because of its life-extending effects, MORTARD brings comparable cost-saving benefits to ready-mixed mortar.

The ability to premix mortar and deliver it to the job site in readyto-use form eliminates the need for storage facilities to protect the sand and cement from contamination, loss and the elements. Worker productivity is also increased. The mason formerly assigned to mortar mixing can now work on lay-up.

And because the mortar is centrally batched in large quantities, the consistency is uniform and re-tempering is minimal, if required at all. MORTARD also eliminates waste because unused mortar can be kept in storage for use the following day.
